nigel slater's orzo with courgettes and grana padano

We're back to a full house tonight as Kay and Mike are up for the night before they skive off to Croatia on holiday, although the squeeze is slightly alleviated as it's a Bikini Blitz tonight. So whilst I'm out working on my running technique (apparently your legs have to cycle like you're riding a bike), Ana is at home getting all experimental with her favourite veg - the courgette.

It's a surprisingly great meal. Not surprising because Ana cooked it I hasten to add, but the way the sweet veg harmonises with the orzo and smokey/salty bacon. She may cook it again, but only if she can find the recipe again.

Here's a thing though, what's the point of The Observer Food Monthly? It just seems to be the personal PR department for Nigel Slater. It's very dull.

Wine Time
Anybody want to guess what the dominant flavours here are? It's going to be the salty cheese or the pancetta depending on how smoked it is, either way you'll probably onto a winner with a lighter red like a Beaujolais or a New World Pinot. If you fancy a white, how about a dry, mineral Riesling to cut through the fattiness?

mushroom pappardelle & beetroot and apple borscht

What to do when you've got two half-punnets of mushrooms in the fridge? It's Book Club tomorrow, so given I've got to sort out a starter as well this evening, we need something quick and easy, and preferably cheap as chips. Step forward Nigel Slater:

mushroom pappardelle
It has the added bonus of using the awful dried tagliatelle Ana bought last week, so double-thumbs up all round!

Dinner out the way, tonight's fun involves making a massive batch of beetroot and apple borscht - enough for lunch for me, and as a starter for five tomorrow night. Curiously for the first time my fingers don't end up totally purple, no idea why though...

Food of the Milos
It's a day of visiting and playing today, fuelled by the usual breakfast nibbles and boiled egg for lunch. So far so good, however our banker - last night's Indian style Rick Stein shepherd's pie - turns out to be a bit of a damp squib. He ate it, mainly because Ana spooned it into his mouth, but he was slightly perturbed by the colour, and it's less-than-normal moistness.

the wiggles and mushroom pappardelle

More frugal eating this evening - holiday beckons after all. And what better way to use up some unhappy looking mushrooms in the fridge, than by combining them with garlic, pasta (sadly spaghetti was all we had in the cupboard, if you discount the horrid gluten-free fuselli in the corner), and more of our home-grown parsley? None better ways, that's how many.

mushroom pappardelle
Actually, it makes a change cooking a Nigel Slater dish that isn't laksa. I really must get over my intense dislike of him and make more effort with Kitchen Diaries.

Before we got to this fine creation however, we first had to experience Milo's first ever concert - The Wiggles at Hammersmith Apollo! Rock and Roll!

Here we are before, fortified by a pint at Ye White Hart with Steve, Isla-boo and Claire. Do we look like we know what we're getting into? Frankly no, but at least me and mccarthy have two years of training under our belts, which is more than can be said of the Harcups.

the wiggles
Here we are after, back in the pub, recovering with our Wags the Dog ears, light-up wiggles stick and Captain Feathersword erm, Feather sword:

post pub wigglesIn a word it was utter-genius! I loved it, anas loved and the milo and isla's definitely loved it. Steve and Claire looked stunned, but aircon failure aside it was the best gig I've been to this year.

Milo's favourite bit were probably the appearance of Murry and Jeff in the crowd, and Twinkle Twinkle. Sadly no sign of Kylie this year. What's the point of being a dad eh? At least my dad had Suzi Quatro in Happy Days to pretend to appreciate for her acting...

Right, food. Post Wiggles we had an abortive barbecue which just didn't seem to catch or do anything other than smoke for about 3 hours, before finally getting going just as I was going to bed.

It almost caused a divorce I can tell you, but ana hit upon the perfect solution. Whilst me and milo pushed not-very-burning coals around, she cooked his sausages and corn-on-the-cob in the kitchen. They then got transferred to the barbie to 'cook' for as long as his patience could hold out. Which was about a minute, and he ate the lot.

We had the pasta, but you knew that, didn't you? Didn't you?

pumpkin and tomato laksa

After last night's hard peach debacle, I attempt to clear out some stray ingredients filling the cupboard and veg bowl to create Nigel's pumpkin and tomato laksa.

It's not entirely successful...

pumpkin and tomato laksa
As you can see, the coriander was probably beyond it's last legs but as that's only a garnish I wasn't too disappointed. However, the noodles - gahhh!

Usually I favour straight to wok style noodles, but tonight I used up some dried, handily ignoring the fact ana hates the dried ones. Top tip - don't cook them in the pan because they suck up all the juice, and make the whole thing go slightly gloopy, and cause the tomatoes burn to the bottom. Arses - why can't I get noodles right?

Food of the Milos
It's the final battle to Julia's today, so he has a minimal breakfast. He didn't really eat his lunchtime pizza, or the off menu choice of spaghetti hoops. He did have some banana bread there, before guzzling half a kilo of chopped carrots and houmous for dinner.

pumpkin and tomato laksa

After last night's quick couple of drinks after work, I'm feeling a bit sleepy today but I do have the added bonus of getting the whanau (eh-wana-waha-ehoo-ah-Te-Mana) back from Vectis. Icing on the cake comes in the form a delightful lunch with Bad Lucy at the Lyric.

Sprinkles on top of the cake arrive in the form of Nigel Slater's chilli-laden Laksa which not only uses up the leftover squash from the other night, but also gives double home-made thai paste. Then we get an extra cherry on top when we realise the new series of The Mentalist is on! Ana spends all night on Facebook (whatever that is).

pumpkin and tomato laksa

Holiday over, we're back and we're on a health kick: No booze, and only healthy dinners for a whole month. Hopefully mostly vegetarian - let's DETOX (and lose weight and be healthy, and hopefully save some money) - Wooo!

2010 dawned in a torrent of cow, potatoes and a chocolate gateau seemingly impregnated with a whole bottle of brandy, chez Davis & Brenda. Plus a fine selection of ale/champagne/sloe gin/fizzy lager and wine. Having driven home we're both starving, tired, cold and not in the mood for 'health' and 'goodness'. Seeing as there's only an acorn squash left at home, we've got little choice but to get on the health horse, and with Nigel Slater as our champion jockey we kick off with a pretty spiky laksa.

pumpkin and tomato laska

Roll on health, wealth and some sort of wisdom...

Food of the Milos
Having pillaged Davis & Lucy's house of all their smoothies, Milo's first dinner at home is some defrosted spag bol, cos we're great parents like that.

tomato curry & mushroom pappardelle

Suddenly a combination of cost and health has meant Simon Hopkinson's Tomato Curry has become something of regular meal. Jude's coming over tonight to watch Strictly, so the plan today is get some more tomatoes on our usual trip to the Farmer's Market this morning.

It starts off to plan; babyccino - check, feeding the ducks - check, Farmer's market - check. Then the ana's throw a spanner into our carefully nurtured routine, she needs a new frock for her birthday this week. However, what could've been an absolute disaster with monkey creating hell because he's bored/tired/hungry, and the ana's tearfully breaking down in the changing room trying to get out of her Dallas style shoulder pads, goes like a dream! Ana finds three amazing dresses in which she looks amazing in, and the milos flirts outrageously with the owner. We even get him in bed in time for us to tidy up *and* make Nigel Slater's mushroom pappardelle.

A quick afternoon trip to the supermarket because I forgot the tomatoes (gahhh!), it's full-steam ahead for Strictly and curry.

Food of the Milos
Crumpets and half of my Shreddies for breakfast, b-ccino, and a pear at the farmer's market before a snoopy snooze. More apples and pears in the afternoon, and the remaining mushroom pasta for dinner. This was later supplemented by a large amount of Strictly crips and howmous. Hmmmm...

the boat race

Time was our boat race extravaganzas started at lunchtime at The Blue Anchor, and ended up in the Samratt in Putney, with various hijinks in-between. Breakdancing in broken glass outside of the The Duke's Head anyone?

We were young and zany, "somebody" would have a bag of miniatures some trolley dolly would've given him, "somebody else" would eat as much fizzing shellfish a pound could buy at six o'clock in the evening, and a smallish "somebody" would pay for a curry for three in Golder's Green, and yet spend all evening with his head wedged in a bin. Happy days!

Now we're middle class parents so it's all changed: First we line our stomachs with a cheeky sav blanc and leek risotto whilst magic slept like a dog.

leek risotto
Then we repair to Claire, Steve and Isla's flat to eat the finest cheese Claire can blag from work, and try and see the race from amongst crowd. We just about manage, and here's milo, ana's and her fizzy rose and the oxford boat streaking to the finish line from their chi-chi flat:

milo and the oxford boat
Not convinced? Well here's the view of the finish line from their balcony:

the finish line
Having sorted out Isla's dowry to our satisfaction, we repair home for a mini-meal of crispy chicken and cavalo nero to fill the space exotic cheeses and fizzy wine have left.

crispy chicken and cavalo nero
Naturally I can't get any cavalo nero because it's not in season. This is despite passing several healthy plants in the allotments between here and the farmer's market, so we 'make do' with kale. In many ways I presume this is what the war must've been like.

Food of the Milos
Not much to report; he ate a large chunk of Claire's extra-strong cheddar, managed to snaffle some smoked salmon (although I ate the blini), and had leek risotto for dinner. Of more interest Miss Brenda Baxendale, was the news that Steve's best friends own Montell's (or whatever it's called now). I shall get hold of some VIP passes for our next visit.

Rest now, I have work for you all later.
